Alisha Rules The World

I remember when I was 10 and I used to read Top of the Pops and Smash Hits magazine religiously. ESPECIALLY when they gave away sticker sets of all the heartthrobs of the day like Peter Andre (back when a 6-pack meant abs not beer) and Kavana (remember him? nope?) and boy bands like 911, a1, and other numerically fixated yet talent deficient acts. Back then, I thought Alisha's Attic were THE SHIT despite having only heard one of their songs on a free compilation that TOTP gave out. I was obsessed with their leopard print clothes, bindis, dark eyeliner, Karen's bad roots and Shelley's red streaks. From the ages of 10 until 13 when I was finally allowed to dye my hair, I would spend my pocket money on hair mascara (remember THAT?) and sit in my room painstakingly putting gold and red streaks in the front of my hair. I can still remember the smell and the greasy smudges on my pillowcase. Ahh, youth...

I don't have much in my life, but take it, it's yours.

I'm back, after a week of hectic times and internet silence. A lot has been going on and a lot WILL be going on; I will be uploading photos from Sandra's Divine Birthday Party (her John Waters themed 30th) and will try to get some pics of the music video shoot I'm doing today for She's Hit. This week I'm doing a photoshoot with Rosie Blake and more filming with Rachel Sharpe. It's going to be busy as hell but hopefully fun too. And I might find time to do a bit of uni work, maybe, one day............. who knows?

Bowlie 2

This weekend I'm off to All Tomorrow's Parties, a.k.a Bowlie 2 at Butlins in Minehead, so expect no posts til next week! I'll be taking a camera so hopefully I'll have lots of nice photos of what we got up to (the good, bad and ugly). Here's a list of the various acts playing. I'm pissed off that I'll miss Best Coast because I only have a pass for the Saturday and Sunday. But I didn't have to pay for it, so mustn't grumble!

Justify My Love

As much as I think Madonna is a moron these days, she was an utter babe in this video.

Halloween!

This is what me and the boyfriend went as on Halloween:

...and yes, I'd like him to keep the Bryan head on all the time! Er, just kidding.......

Zola Jesus

Part of the neu goth welle, Zola Jesus is 21yr old Nika Roza Danilova from Wisconsin. Despite her opera training, her voice reminds me more of Siouxsie Sioux's (judging by the picture, she's also been taking down some make-up notes). Some reviewers have compared her to Florence and the Machine and I can kinda see what they're getting at. But (no offence, Florence) I find Zola Jesus a lot more listenable. And I'm a sucker for hot goth girls with nice hair and a fondness for 70s Italian horror films.
She's playing in Glasgow in September with Fever Ray, this is good news indeed.

Dum Dum Girls

Dum Dum Girls are a fourpiece from Brooklyn on the Sub-Pop label. Their style reminds me of the Shangri-Las (especially the above photo with the motorcycle). They will be playing at the 1-2-3-4 festival in Shoreditch on the 24th of July alongside lots of other great new bands.
Listen to their tracks & watch some of the videos HERE.

Nearly there...

So close to achieving my dream hair:

Mine is a few inches longer than Debbie's in this photo. I need to bleach some more of the underneath layer and stick some silvery toner in it to take out the remaining red tones. It's quite a strange golden blonde colour right now, which is nice in its own way, but I want it white. I'm pleasantly surprised that my hair still feels in good condition when by rights it should be breaking off all over the place.
If anybody knows any cheap, quick and safe ways of getting dark brown hair to go white blonde, feel free to share your tips. I tend to use Smart Colour Platinum Blonde because it has no Ammonia, is fairly cheap and easy to use. After that, I stick on loads of Directions White Toner and leave it for about half an hour to sink in before washing out. If you leave it too long, your hair might absorb a slight lilac hue. I don't mind this, but if you'd rather not have it then just leave it for the prescribed 15 mins and wash out thoroughly.
Here's another gratuitous pic of Debs and her lovely two-toned hairdo.

This is more like my length.
