R.I.P Tom Nicon

22-year old French model Tom Nicon was found dead on Friday morning. He fell 40ft from his apartment in  central Milan on the eve of Milan Men's Fashion Week. It is being treated as suicide as sources claim that Nicon was feeling very low and depressed in the days leading up to his death. This is just the latest in a recent spate of suicides or suicide attempts within the fashion industry. Since November of last year , we can count Daul Kim, Ambrose Olsen and Lina Marulanda - all in their 20s - and designer Alexander McQueen (40) among those who have taken their own lives. Last month model Noemie Lenoir (30) attempted suicide by taking an overdose of alcohol and drugs.

"People think we are young and beautiful and rich and happy. But we're not. We go to castings and the directors take one look at us and then we're dismissed. You spend your whole life wondering what's wrong with you. Why didn't I get that job? You're competing with your friends, you're away from your family. The pressure is huge. It's not the fairytale life people would expect."

Craig McDean - Superhero

Okay so, inspired by the last post I decided to do some research of photographer Craig McDean... I never expected to find these super-hero themed fashion shoots, especially as I was just flicking through a book on superhero couture the other day. Weird.
Anyway, all of this is very relevant to the work I'm doing at the moment, which makes me wonder whether it belongs in this blog or in my online scrapbook... Oh well, I'm just thinking aloud. On with the images:

okay, technically not a superhero, but still...

Oh crap. Further googling has shown that he was the guy behind these photos of Kristen Stewart, the ones that shamelessly ripped off photos that my superheroine Linder made in collaboration with Christina Birrer back in 1981. I guess it shows that McDean has great artistic influences, but when the iconic work of someone like Linder is appropriated for someone like Kristen Stewart (I'm not the biggest fan, can you tell?) it makes me mad. Imitation may be the most sincere form of flattery but it is also the laziest.

Megan Fox in Interview Magazine.

I've never sat through a single Megan Fox film nor would I willingly read any interview with her, but I have to admit she looks incredible in the accompanying photos to the recent Interview magazine piece. Very few women could be photographed with a mannequin and not look grotesque in comparison. Well done Megan.

Sebastian Horsley

The artist, writer and self-proclaimed dandy of the underworld was found dead today in his Soho flat. The 47-yr old was reported to have died of a heroin overdose. This comes only days after a play adapted from his autobiography opened at the Soho Theatre. In an interview with The Independent in 2006, Horsley joked that his suicide note would read:
"I've decided to stop living on account of the cost."
Among many things, Sebastian was known for was his outrageous yet sharp dress sense, so here are a few images to celebrate that...

A true individual and a remarkable character. Love him or loathe him, it's certain that there'll never be another like Sebastian. The play, Dandy in the Underworld, will continue to run at the Soho Theatre - so if you are able to go you definitely should!

Zola Jesus

Part of the neu goth welle, Zola Jesus is 21yr old Nika Roza Danilova from Wisconsin. Despite her opera training, her voice reminds me more of Siouxsie Sioux's (judging by the picture, she's also been taking down some make-up notes). Some reviewers have compared her to Florence and the Machine and I can kinda see what they're getting at. But (no offence, Florence) I find Zola Jesus a lot more listenable. And I'm a sucker for hot goth girls with nice hair and a fondness for 70s Italian horror films.
She's playing in Glasgow in September with Fever Ray, this is good news indeed.

Dum Dum Girls

Dum Dum Girls are a fourpiece from Brooklyn on the Sub-Pop label. Their style reminds me of the Shangri-Las (especially the above photo with the motorcycle). They will be playing at the 1-2-3-4 festival in Shoreditch on the 24th of July alongside lots of other great new bands.
Listen to their tracks & watch some of the videos HERE.

Her name is Rio...

Patrick Nagel was an American artist famous for his Deco-inspired fashion illustrations of beautiful women.
His style was influenced in equal parts by the perspectives and line work of Japanese woodcuts and the poses and glamour of Art Deco muses.
He completed the picture which was to appear on Duran Duran's Rio album in 1982, only 2 years before his sudden death at the age of 38.

Want.

More Nail Art

This photo has been on my camera for about a week, so to me it's old news. But for y'all, the colour is Barry M Berry Ice Cream.
It has just occurred to me how inappropriate the name 'Barry' is for a cosmetic. Just doesn't sound too glamorous...

Hair-oine

The young Priscilla Presley is my new hairspiration. If I could coax my hair into any form, colour or texture resembling hers circa her marriage to Elvis I'd be a happy woman. Sadly, as anyone who knows me can testify, my hair is fucked. BEYOND. Too many ill-advised home bleach jobs have left the entire top layer fried and no matter how many times I try to dye over it, it seems to remain a weird pale brown colour. Now with a flattering 3 inches of dark roots. The way I style it, it isn't too noticable and can almost pass for decent, but I know the hideous truth. I've been avoiding salon trips as I just KNOW the stylist will propose a Faustian pact of cutting it all off for the sake of a fresh start. Take my hair, take my soul. The sad fact of the matter is, I naturally have thick, glossy, dark brown hair, and if I had only left it alone I'd only be a bump-it away from Miss Beaulieu's do.

LIVE AND LEARN.

(On a serious note - has anyone tried these bump-it things? I need to know if they're worth investigating. I've read some pretty bad reviews and I don't fancy spending money on anything that's going to fuck with my follicles any more...)

We've discussed this before...

...But any guy having doubts over how he should present himself really need look no further.

Sunglasses After Dark

Amazing shoot from Harper's Bazaar Korea.

I love EVERYTHING about this - the hair, the sunglasses, the jacket, the jewels, the lips...
Perfect alternative to all of the shitty 'beach babe' editorials you see around this time of the year. Summer after Summer you get hideously bored of sunkissed bitches lying around pools or running in the sand wearing floaty dresses. If you live in the city, as I do, this kind of shoot is twenty times more relevant. Not to mention that I'd look like queen of the idiots bouncing around some sunny shore in sandals and a kaftan. More of this, less of that.

And thank you HB Korea xxx
